Post Civil War CDV of a Civil War tintype or ambrotype of Allen Danford Lile, of the 18th Michigan Infantry and family. While there, the boat was contracted to carry former Union POWs from Confederate prisons.

Though the boat was only supposed to carry about 365 people, it was stuffed with more than 2,000. Its explosion killed nearly 1,200 people, making it the deadliest maritime disaster in U. Please note that his has been added to indicate new information since the image has been posted for sale.

A researcher who studies the Sultana reached out to say that documents do not prove Lile was on the Sultana and perhaps evaded a very likely death in that disaster because he was sick, and instead of being put on the Sultana, he remained at Camp Fisk, outside of Vicksburg. Lile had been a prisoner of war, captured in Alabama. Sometimes historical resources are incomplete, and family lore may also be incomplete. This is the information that we have available.

The back reads During or after the Civil War, Grandfather A. Lile, Grandmother Cornelia Lile, Son Baby Perry.
