Artillery in action at Fredricksburg. The photo shows the field of battle at Fredericksburg, with soldiers manning cannon, ready to fire. The albumen is not dated, but a vintage tag accompanying the photo states that it was taken in June 1863, and depicts Battery D Second U.

Artillery was raised on March 21,1861, with Battery D being a light battery which participated in First Bull Run, the capture of West Point, Gaines' Mill, Glendale, and Lamvern Hill. In the Maryland campaign it was engaged at Burkittsville and Antietam, as well as Fredericksburg and Salem Church.

During the fall of 1863, it was actively employed with the cavalry and saw in action at Raccoon Ford, Robinson River, Morton's Ford, Blue Mill's Landing, and Muddy Run. In 1864 the battery was engaged at Todd's Tavern, participated in Sheridan's raids, Yellow Tavern, Matadequin Creek, and Trevilian Station.

It later saw action in the Valley with Philip Sheridan, at Milford and Luray. The photo comes with a certificate of authenticity from University Archives and Founder John Reznikoff. There is a 2133 on the bottom of photo. This HISTORIC albumen photograph measures 9 3/4" wide and 7 1/2" tall. The matte measures 20" wide x 16" tall. Is a method of producing a photographic print. It was the first commercial process of producing a photo on a paper base from a negative. It became the dominant form of photographic positives from 1855 to the start of the 20th century, with a peak in the 1860-90 period. Vintage Albumen prints are often characterized by having a yellow tone due to aging, and usually have a shiny surface, as they are coated with egg whites, or albumen which creates this smooth shiny surface.

This photograph exhibits both of these qualities. The matting is in excellent overall condition with ligth wear. The photo is more than 160 years old and has expected light age discoloration and wear.

There is a real light crease going from upper left edge to lower right edge, a 3/4 tear repaired middle right edge, and light wrinkling. The corners and edges also show expected wear. Please view ALL photos to judge condition for yourself.
