This is a circa 1870 British sailors Woolwork " Woolie". It features 2 original period photographs of a British Royal Navy " Tar" probably the artist and a elderly lady possibly his wife / mother. They are encircled by 8 flags. Union Jack, United States, Austria. Possibly to denote the ancestry of the persons in photos. Their is a crown at top and acorns and oak leaves at bottom. It has the to be expected fading to the front and a thread damaged at top right (see photo 7). The photos are faded and the face of the woman is barely visible. It appears all original with back paper removed to examine. The sail cloth measures 18 3/8" X 14 1/4". The frame appears original but may have to be repaired / replaced. It has a dent on right side. Unfortunately the photos are not identified. They are affixed and could not be lifted to examine their backs. The sailor / tar is quite possibly the artist who created this wonderful piece. It is believed to have some relation to the Billups family who have a long history in Mathews Virginia.
