Chatten of Company A of the Virginia militia, whom later formed up Company A of the 38th Virginia Infantry. He was wounded in the arm during Pickett's Charge, captured on the 4th of July, and was sent to Ft. Delaware where he died about two-months later. This image shows him wearing a ten-button frock that was likely distinctive of Co. A, but unfortunately no other views of Company A are out there to my knowledge.
Comes with a small binder of research. The image was split from a charcoal view of Chatten armed and another 1/6th ambrotype by Charles Rees that is NOT on the market for sale. The original paper identifying William belongs to the Rees image, and is not included.
