This is an original photo by Alexander Gardner titled Slave Pen. Part of the photo shows where the slaves were kept. Another part shows the signage for the company. There is some toning in the photo.
You can compare it to photo in reprint book. The last 3 photos are from the reprint of Gardners book in 1962. The photo offered is original from the original book put out by Gardner in 1866. Reprint book is not included in sale, but is used for reference. These are rare Civil War photos as the book wasn't that popular. Many are in public institutions limiting the number available for collectors. I have been collecting these for a number of years. Gardner worked with Matthew Brady but generally wasn't given credit for his work. The item "ALEXANDER GARDNER original 1862 CIVIL WAR PHOTOGRAPH Slave Pen Alexandria, VA" is in sale since Monday, June 4, 2018.
