YOUNG CIVIL WAR MUSICIAN- Wearing Cap, Holding Fife. This is a 1/6th plate ruby ambrotype ca.

Looks like a New York State uniform jacket with lightly gilded muffin buttons. He holds a fife with silver ferrules at the ends. Fifers have a long tradition in the military but the Civil War is considered the height of their employment by the US Army, replaced by the bugle in subsequent wars.

Fifes were used to communicate field commands, for camp duty and for ceremonial purposes. For a brief history see: Union Volunteer Fife and Drum. Item permanently guaranteed vintage and authentic.

This is an original vintage photograph from the period, it is NOT a reproduction. Condition : "Very Good", nice contrast and detail, there are a few fingerprints on the plate. Ambrotype is housed in a slightly worn split wood and leather case, the cover is included.
