Gerrit Smith Backus, nephew of the Abolitionist & Presidential Candidate Gerrit Smith WAS a notable engineer WHO designed the Watervliet/& Troy Canal lockhouse, and the famous Trans Andes Railroad from Callao, Peru to Lima including the Galera Tunnel, one of the highest in the world and now a popular Tourist destination. An original group of 4 Civil War era CDV photos of Backus and his wife Fanny Johnson Backus, from a CDV album of the Gerrit Smith family of peterboro, new York. 2 of the images have ink ID & 3 with inscriptions from Lima, Peru, the 4th is a bust view of Fanny made from an 1850s daguerreotype. Gerrit Smith Backus, a Geneva, NY native died on the job in the Andes Mountains in 1866 & is buried at Callao. Minor wear, one with edges trimmed, Overall VG.
