Photographs and documents relating to the family of Dr. King of San Antonio, Texas, circa 1880s to 1910s. Edward King, settled the family at Bushy Ridge Plantation near Warrenton, Virginia. Both Claudius and his brother, Albert F. King, trained as doctors before the Civil War and supposedly both cared for wounded Confederate soldiers after the battle of Bull Run.

Claudius would go south to Louisiana and Texas, where he would serve as a surgeon in the Confederate Army, while his brother, after briefly serving with the C. And worked in a hospital there. King would remain in Louisiana and Texas after the war. This lot includes two photographs of Claudius E. King from the 1890s or 1900s, as well as a photogravure print of one of them that includes a facsimile signature.

The oval photograph (just under 5 ½" by 7 ¼") shows an older white haired man with a goatee and handlebar mustache. This image was published and can be found at his pages on Find-a-Grave and Family Search. The larger photograph (just under 7" by 10") shows the same man smoking a cigar and sporting a cowboy hat.

This lot includes a photogravure copy of this image. There are also two cabinet cards from the 1880s of a woman with curly hair, with one by Calloway of San Antonio (possibly from the mid to late 1870s).

I believe these show Claudius' wife, Emily Bryan King, in her late twenties or thirties. The lot also includes a photograph of a man identified as Bryan King (the eldest son), a photo postcard of a young woman by Drew of San Antonio (probably a daughter), and a group photo that is likely the King family. All of these date to about 1900s or 1910s.

Additionally, the lot includes a few documents relating to the King family. There's a calendar page (just over 4" by 5") that gives details about the death of Claudius E. King in 1919 and notes that his wife was born in Woodville, Mississippi, on October 29, 1851.

There's an 1883 receipt (5 ¾" by 9 ½") from Hugo & Schmeltzer of San Antonio for a burial plot at Anchor Lodge Cemetery. And there is a list of some of the children's names written on a sheet (5 ¾" by 9 ½") with Dr. King's business letterhead from the 1890s. These are all the items I have relating to Dr. The photographs and documents are in only good condition generally with the expected wear and soiling for their age.

The photographs all show good tonal range and exhibit good or better detail. A very nice lot of items from a prominent San Antonio TX family with ties to the Confederacy and the Civil War!
