This lot consist of a very nice pair of equestrian hobbles often utilized on slaves that were found attached to a pole in an old barn in slave quarters of a Lowcountry plantation. They were hammered into the pole about six foot off the ground held by the two prong iron latch artifact shown in the photo gallery.
They measure around 22 1/2" long from the outside of the cuffs with a about a 15" hand forged chain. The cuffs are roughly 3 across the inside and they are in great condition showing a rich, dark patina with expected rust and pitting. They are very solid with no brittle flaking or loose rust and display very well. Also included is an iron ring, iron hoe with coupling, wagon / plow / equestrian tool attachments and a photo reprint depicting slaves on a S. Plantation working in the field.
This is a very nice collection depicting slave life that make a super display and will be a fantastic addition to your collection.
