BANKS 1862 FREDRICKS CDV PHOTO. CIVIL WAR UNION MAJOR GENERAL NATHANIEL P. 1894 was a politician and military officer, best known for his role as a Union Major General during the American Civil War. He was born in Massachusetts and initially worked as a lawyer before entering politics. Banks served as a U. Congressman and Governor of Massachusetts before being appointed a major general in the Union Army during the Civil War.

During the Civil War, General Banks played significant roles in the military campaigns in the Gulf of Mexico and Louisiana. He led the ill-fated Red River Campaign and was involved in the Union's operations in the Confederate-held South.
