RARE MUSEUM QUALITY CIVIL WAR. This is a rare Museum Quality. 1861 Civil War Sixth Plate Cased. Photograph is housed in a beautiful, Gutta Percha / Thermoplastic, Union Hard Case with original matt and binding and cover glass.

The Union Case is very beautiful, it looks new and very well preserved. It is a rich and dark, chocolate brown color. The front has a ribbon inscribed with the words, The Union and Constitution, above a Union Shield surrounded on both sides by the Union flag.

All of this is guarded above by an eagle. The Case is in excellent condition. The molded images on both sides are crisp and sharp with not even a hint damage or wear to even the highest points of the design.

The surface is bright and retains its original brilliant surface shine. The corners are sharp and there are no edge chips, significant wear, cracks, repairs or damage of any kind. Inside is a 1/6 plate tintype of a rather sad and tired looking soldier. The soldier is quite delicately handtinted on the cheeks and his patterned shirt is tinted pink, quite unusual for the time.

His large rough hands rest upon faded blue pants. The image itself is quite detailed with great subtlety of both tone and coloring. The soldier is surrounded by a mat that reads, Constitution and Union, divided at the bottom by the date July 4, 1776. The 2 top corners show the Union flag, 3 rifles and a liberty skull cap. The lower right corner depicts a 2 crossed Union flags, 2 crossed swords and a cannon with cannonballs. Across from this is an extremelt well preserved red velvet pad with an early American eagle embossed on it.

Behind the tintype on the Littlefield paper, we discovered some writing and the date, 1861 (see enlargement). This mat is covered with the original double thick glass.

A rare, wonderful and dated, museum quality 1860s Civil War Sixth Plate. In a stunning Gutta Percha/ Union case with a powerful portrait a Soldier with beautiful tinted color which will be a fantastic addition to any collection!!
