1864 CIVIL WAR WHITE BLACK SLAVE ABOLITION PROPAGANDA Learning is Wealth, PAXON. Description: Circa 1864 abolitionist White Slave Propaganda to Promote Freedman's Relief CDV (carte-de-visite). Printed on the reverse is text which states the intended purpose of this important image, "The nett (sic) proceeds from the sale of these Photographs will be devoted to the education of Colored People in the department of the gulf, now under the command of Major General Banks". Depicted is a black African American former slave (WILSON) reading a book to three former slave children who have very fair skin. (NOTE: THE SYMBOLISM OF WILSON, PREVIOUSLY DEPICTED AS THE BRANDED SLAVE FROM NEW ORLEANS, COMMITTING THE VIOLATION OF "KNOWING HOW TO READ"). In 1863, as part of a campaign to raise sympathy for former slave children, fund-raising photographs, such as this, were created depicting former slave children of light complexion in an effort to persuade U. This proved to be an effective way for the National Freedman's Association.
