Original tintype of a Native American in uniform during the Civil War Period. I don't know where to start!!! Original photographs of Native Americans in uniform during this early time period is scarce enough. You see Native Americans but not many in uniform! This 1/4 plate tintype is very clear & is also tinted!!!
He is wearing a civilian type hat with a feather plume on the side, a great coat with cape (tinted buttons) & has civil war shoes (brogans). He is holding a small book on the (green tinted cloth) table. His handsome features are of Native American with a light mustache & chin hair (many Native Americans from the east/southeast wore facial hair). It is unknown whether or not he is Confederate or Union nor what tribe he is from. The Native Americans fought on both sides in the Civil War!!Now on the period case, there is some wear & just discovered that there were three 1862 two cent cancelled George Washington stamps affixed on the inside. Perhaps they were there behind the tintype for many years & are original to the case! Don't know for sure!
This photograph has been in my collection for over 20+ years!!! A great investment & historical treasure!!
