Today we are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful Civil War-era tintype photograph of a union officer, complete with velvet-lined union case! An early form of photography, tintypes were made by transferring a positive image directly to a thin sheet of metal, which was coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. They were the most popular form of photography in the 1860s and 1870s. This one is a ninth-plate tintype, which refers to the size of the image. This particularly detailed and very clear image depicts a seated Union cavalry officer in full uniform, including a Sheridan-style pork pie hat with 5th Cavalry insignia and cavalry braid.

He is holding an M1860 Cavalry saber and sheath. His uniform denotes his rank as an officer. He has dark hair and a somber expression. The image is mounted in a dark brown Gutta Percha union case with metal closure. A rich green velvet pad with embossed crest on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph.

Gilt metal surrounds the image. The outside of the case has ornate stamped floral designs and scrollwork surrounding a beehive image. Tintype presents in very good, as-found antique condition, with possible minor patina to the image but no major visible damage noted.

Frame case has wear and minor dings commensurate with age and use, including worn edges and corners and minor chips. Latch works, but sticks and requires some pressure to open the case.
