Original CIVIL War CDV 88th Ohio O. V. I. Camp Chase Prison Guard Lt. Winpigler

  

Up for sale is an original Civil War period image of Lieut. Winpigler of the 88th Ohio Infantry Company F. Was the Ohio unit selected to mainly guard the Confederate prisoners at Camp Chase Prison in Columbus, Ohio. James Winpigler enlisted on 7/20/1863 as a 2nd Lieutenant at the age of 22.

On 7/31/1863 he was commissioned into Company F and promoted to 1st Lieut.. He mustered out on 7/3/1865 at Camp Chase. The CDV photo is in good overall condition and still retains good clarity with minimal fading. Some age stains as seen in images Signed at the bottom Lt. Witt Columbus, Ohio photographer ID I think, hard to make out at the bottom.

It was initially known as the "1st Battalion Governor's Guard". The 88th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Chase.

In July 1862 and mustered in on October 27, 1862, for three years service under Colonel. In September 1862, the 88th moved to Covington, Kentucky. The regiment served guard duty at Camp Chase until October 1863, and served at Cincinnati, Ohio.
