Captain Hudson Sawyer was a distinguished officer in the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery during the American Civil War. Born around 1842, he enlisted at the age of 21 from Levant, Maine, on July 28, 1863. His military career progressed as follows. First Lieutenant: July 27, 1864. Captain of Company I: April 25, 1865.

Served as an aide to General Philippe Régis de Trobriand. Was wounded on June 18, 1864.

Breveted to Major for his service. Mustered out on September 11, 1865.

After the war, Sawyer continued his dedication to service by becoming the post chaplain at Togus Hospital in Maine in 1903. For a more personal insight, a letter dated March 30, 1863, showcases Sawyer inquiring about a commissioned officer position, reflecting his aspirations and commitment during the war. These records underscore Captain Hudson Sawyer's significant contributions during the Civil War and his continued service in its aftermath.
