Howe was from Stanstead, Quebec, Canada (miles from the Canadian border with Vermont) and later resided in Enfield, New Hampshire. He was thirty-five years old when he enlisted in the summer of 1862. The 11th New Hampshire suffered heavily at Fredericksburg before being transferred to the western theater. The regiment participated in the Siege of Vicksburg as part of the Army of the Tennessee in 1863 before returning to Virginia for the overland campaign in 1864.Howe is listed as having discharged for disability in May 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. The tintype has several scratches in the plate, as well as a varnish smear along the right side. There are a few slight bends to the plate, but they arent particularly noticeable under the glass. The image is housed in a leather half case. Please see my other items for more interesting and original Civil War pieces.
