We are not collectors or experts so please be sure to see all of the photos and consider them a part of the description. This Tintype photo is all original. The metal photo is magnetic. In my opinion the photo is in Good to very good condition with light wear in my opinion and the partial case is in ok condition for the half that is there. But amazing it exists especially considering the fact that this is from somewhere between 1860 to the early 1900's! The image is of a Confederate (We believe) soldier, possibly an Assistant surgeon. He has a coat of some kind on, maybe a uniform coat of some kind, hard for me to tell and has a pair of eye glasses in his right breast coat pocket. This is, from the information that we have from the modern notes on paper found behind the photo: CHARLES TAYLOR RICHARDSON BORN 1839 ATTENDED UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA CO H COMPANY H?

JUNE 22, 1861 MANNASSASS TRANSFERED TO CO A COMPANY A? DECEMBER 31, 1961 ASST SURG MAY 1863 ASSISTANT SURGEON? TRANSFERED AUGUST 1864 LIVED IN CHARLESTON WEST VIRGINIA IN 1898 DIED 1922 according to the research paper we found behind the picture.

Here is some information provided to us from a friend that loves doing historical research and geneology and was kind enough to give us permission to share the information that he was able to dig up and is public knowledge if you have access to the resources. From the Biographical Register of Physicians who served the Confederacy in a Medical Capacity.

In 1860 he attended the University of Virginia. The census had him living in the domicile of Charles T. Beale, a farmer, in Botetourt county. On 22 June 1861, he enlisted in Douthat's company of Botetourt Light Artillery and assigned to the 28th Virginia Infantry. He did extra duty as clerk to the adjutant.

On 23 November he wrote to Medical Director Thomas Henry Williams declining a detail as a nurse at the University Hospital in Charlottesville. He desired a position that would increase his knowledge of practical medicine.

In June of 1862, he was ill and admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond with an intermittent fever. On 25 July 1862, he was made sergeant of Company A of the 28th Virginia Infantry. On 4 November 1862, he was detailed as Hospital Steward, presumably in Staunton, Virginia, as he was relieved from there on 24 November, with orders to report to Longstreet's Medical Director. In 1863 he received his Medical Degree from the University of Virginia and was made Assistant Surgeon of the 28th Virginia Infantry. In March of 1864, he was back in a Richmond Hospital as a patient. In August, he was detailed to a hospital in Staunton. He was Assistant Surgeon there until ordered to Lynchburg in February of 1865. He was captured there in April and paroled. After the war, he married Jennie Love Forrest and practiced in Charles Town. In 1903, he was practicing in Omaha, Nebraska. This guy had a great military background!!

All of the other tintypes, ambrotype, and Daguerreotypes came from his estate that we will be listing and were mainly military pictures and soldiers. The glass itself does not show any cracks and only a few small fleabites on the inside edge under the copper as well as minor scuffs which is normal. There is the Tintype photo, then some kind of metal oval frame, has some weight to it, then the glass and then another detailed copper frame that wraps around to the back and holds it all together, and resembles rope, this outer copper frame has 1 disconnected corner as you can see in the photos.

The outer black case has a really ornate and pretty design to it but is only 1/2 of the case. You will get the additional piece of paper that was found behind it with the modern research notes on it to go with the photo. Again, we are not experts or collectors, but the prior owner was serious about his passion for collecting and for his research!! Don't miss out and check out our other Antique photos from this same collector that we will be listing and all of our other great items! Just a great item in my opinion and a great addition to any collection!
