Original CONFEDERATE CIVIL WAR AMBROTYPE PHOTOGRAPH Mississippi OLE MISS University Greys??? Condition is spectacular overall, 3x4, no case. This came from a recent estate sale, from a family with strong historic ties to the University of Mississippi, Ole Miss. Although there was no identification of the Confederate soldier in the photo, there is the possibility that he was a member of the fabled University Greys, the legendary unit of soldiers comprised almost entirely of Ole Miss students.

In the midst of widespread desertion on both sides of the line, the Greys strode proudly into the pages of history during the Battle of Gettysburg and Picketts Charge on July 3, 1863. This valiant unit is credited with penetrating farthest into the Union lines, considered the high water mark of the confederacy, but at the terrible cost of 100% casualties, killed or wounded. The surviving Greys, though wounded, became part of the Lamar Rifles, also from the area of Oxford, Mississippi, and served the Southern Cause until the bitter end. They were one of very few units to serve the Confederacy from secession to surrender. I so wish the family had seen fit to preserve the name of this young soldier over the decades, but sadly, they did not.
