RARE CABINET PHOTO OF THE U. This is one of the most historic American Civil War battleships in History. The Wabash would go onto serving many more years before being retired. Here she is parked in the Boston Harbor and Black has captured superb details from a stern and port angle.Note her guns are still employed. A truly magnificent cabinet photo for any collector of Naval Civil War imagery. The entire history of The U. Wabash can be viewed online where Wiki has a very similar image of the battleship on their page. FOOTNOTE: In 1860 Black opened his own studio in Boston. He would be the 1st American to shoot an aerial photo from a hot air balloon in 1860 which would later lead to the use of aerial surveillance photography during the Civil War. The Union Army would go onto using this method to spy on the Confederate troops in Virginia.
One of Black's aerial photos is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and shows some of the same parts of the Boston Harbor you can see in this photo. Good luck winning this extraordinary cabinet photo. CONDITION: Please view my detailed scan for the actual condition of the image and as part of my description. The image is wonderfully posed, contains very nice contrast, tonal range and sharpness. The details in this image are simply spectacular! There is a small stable crease seen in the upper part of the photo, but does not effect the overall quality of the image. There are some stains, a few minor stains, but overall this view by a noted Boston iconic photographer is in excellent antique condition. A rare Naval image of a legendary Civil War hero.
