A fine view of Confederate forces captured during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. They are posed by the rails of a wooden fence holding their belongings, awaiting their fate.
The image measures 3.00 by 3.00 inches on the 3 3/8 x 3 5/8 inch mount. Not identified as to photographer, but almost certainly by Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner or their affiliated photographers. Original albumen image near excellent, upper edge of mount slightly chipped with one tiny area of archival tissue tape reinforcement on the back of the mount. This image is from an album assembled by Charles H. Nason, who signed the album's title page (not for sale) as an enlistee in the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry. The photos generally represented the locations of the unit as it moved through the battlefields and forts in the southeast. It roamed throughout Virginia, Pennsylvania, Washington, D. And other areas over the course of the war. The photos were mounted in a scrapbook with the pages in a state of bad deterioration. Some of these images were also published as stereo views by E.A nice aspect of many of the views being auctioned are the period ink descriptions by Nason.
