Antique Civil War Mourning Navy Union Soldier Sixth Plate Tintype Photo + Case. This is one of many Civil War-era tintypes we will be offering for sale in the coming weeks. Bookmark our store for more! Today we are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful Civil War-era tintype photograph of a union soldier, complete with stamped wood and leather union case! An early form of photography, tintypes were made by transferring a positive image directly to a thin sheet of metal, which was coated with a dark lacquer or enamel.

They were the most popular form of photography in the 1860s and 1870s. This one is a sixth-plate tintype, which refers to the size of the image. This photograph depicts a young Union soldier in full uniform, standing in front of a painted scenic backdrop. The insignia on his cap appears to be Navy. A dress sword is at his side, and he is wearing a silk mourning arm band, likely in honor of Abraham Lincoln.

The image is mounted in an embossed union case with latch closure. A light red velvet pad with embossed floral design on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph. Image is surrounded by a gilt metal mat with elaborate scroll and floral details. The outside of the case has embossed circular designs on both sides.

Tintype presents in good, as-found antique condition, with patina and some loss of detail on the image due to darkening. Velvet pad has minor discoloration and minor loss of gilding is present on the gilt mat surround. Union case has wear and minor dings commensurate with age and use, including scuffs, surface loss at edges and loose spine.

What a fantastic addition to any antique photography or Civil War collection. 2-1/2 in width x appx. 3-1/4" in height (frame obscures borders of image) Dimensions/case: 3-1/8" in width (closed), 3-5/8" in height, 5/8" in depth (closed).
