Today we are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful Civil War-era tintype photograph of a union soldier, complete with stamped leather union case! An early form of photography, ambrotypes came just before tintypes and were made by taking a photo negative and imaging it onto tinted glass. This was the most popular form of photography through the 1850s, when tintypes began to take over.
This one is a quarter-plate ambrotype, which refers to the size of the image. This ambrotype was done on dark red glass and features a stunningly clear image of two Union soldiers seated together on a couch against a white studio background.
They are in their Civil War uniforms, including caps, and have tinted faces and pants. The image is mounted in a stamped leather union case with push-button closure. A red velvet pad with embossed floral design on the inner verso side of the case protects the photograph. The glass that went over the ambrotype is present, but has lost two corners so does not mount securely. Image is surrounded by a gilt metal mat with elaborate scroll and flower details.
The outside of the case has a pebbled texture with gilt edge details. Ambrotype presents in very good, as-found antique condition, with patina and minor darkening due to age and display.
Glass is not secure in frame and has two missing corners. Velvet pad has very minor discoloration.
Union case has wear and scuffing commensurate with age and use, including surface loss at edges and minor loss of gilding. What a fantastic addition to any antique photography or Civil War collection. 4-1/4 in height x appx. 3-1/4" in width (frame obscures borders of image) Dimensions/case: 3-3/4" in width (closed), 4-3/4" in height, 3/4" in depth (closed).
