"Bringing In The Wounded" Stereoview by O'Sullivan, May of 1864. This image captures the scene at Alsop House, as a dead soldier has just laid down by four stretcher bearers, after the Battle of Spottsylvania, May 12, 1864. I have photographed the printed information about this scene. Although the title mentioned "wounded", it appears this soldier has died, and is about to be buried in a shallow grave in which one of the bearers is standing in.

The barn to the right was used as the field hospital, behind the Alsop House. There are other soldiers, some full accoutered standing behind a fence in the background. The dead had to be buried quickly as the stench would become intolerable. It appears that the bearer front left is wearing a mask. View photos for condition and detail.
