From a standpoint of the war, however, it doesn't have much to offer. Proctor was called home because of an ailing wife after only a few months.
The first entry is Nov. 3, 1861 and discusses his desire to engage in self-improvement while serving. The next entry is January 1, 1862 and references drill and dinner. Then it jumps to June 15, when Proctor is notified that his wife has taken ill. The diary does continue with a lot of information on daily life in Hillsdale, as well as several pages of genealogical information on the Proctor family with dates of birth, death, etc.
Overall, about 40-50 pages have been filled out of the 233 that are numbered. The binding is tight and all pages are present and complete, none loose, and just a few random scribbles inside the back cover. A great resource for Hillsdale and Proctor history.
