Civil War CDV of a Bucktail Officer POW at Gettysburg
Images of these Bucktails are getting harder and harder to come by (especially the less common ones) let alone one with a Gettysburg connection. This is a bust view carte of Surgeon William T. Humprhey who came down the Susquehanna River from Tioga County in 1861 with the "original" Bucktails - and first commissioned as Assistant Surgeon of the 1st Pennsylvania Rifles. He then was commissioned into the 149th Pennsylvania (Second Bucktails) when that regiment was formed. He was with the regiment through most of its existence. At the battle of Gettysburg he was captured and spent most of the time tending the wounded. From the cupola on Seminary Ridge - he, in company with a Confederate Major watched as Pickett's Charge unfolded on July 3. Very interesting story with this one.
