Lee moved his family into the Norman Stewart house in 1864 after Arlington was confiscated, and he briefly stayed during the war, using it as a headquarters in Richmond, with the house actually owned by Norman Stewart and later rented to Lee's family and sons. Lee used this well-known Richmond address (707 East Franklin St) as his temporary home and headquarters during wartime visits.

During the Civil War, General Robert E. Lee did not have guards stationed outside his headquarters at 707 East Franklin St in Richmond.
