I will be listing several Civil War Tintypes or Photos. This particular one is very unique because of it's size. The Thermoplastic case measures 6 1/8" X 5" and is 3/4 Thick.

At this time, these were very expensive cases to produce, and based on the size of this one, the family must have been pretty well off. This Appears to be a paper Civil War a photo as someone has pointed out as there is what appears to be a slight crease in the background of the image. I have include one photo showing this case with two of the standard size cases. The large case is gorgeous and has great detail showing several three dimensional figures. In the center is what appears to be a Civil War monument with soldiers standing at the base of the monument and a soldier on horseback on the top.

The case is surrounded by angels blowing trumpets and eagles behind shields. The photo image of the soldier appears to be some sort of Militiaman. His hat device has an infantry bugle.

That style of bugle was used widely in the civil war, and a little after till about 1872. The bugle hat decoration was phased out sometime about 1875. Two letters are also shown on the soldiers hat, MH or MR, this could probably identify what unit he was in.

Not totally sure what he is or the year, it could be pre civil war or just very early just judging his uniform. Condition is excellent but there is what looks like some sort of a crease or snake type line to the left of the image that I mentioned It's not a crack in the glass, it looks like some sort of a crease line on the image itself. It runs mostly in the background of the image but it does go through the image area of his hand. The photo image area measurements in the oval glass section is about 4 1/4" X 3 3/8", it's a nice size image. Please let me know if you have any questions.
