Interesting original cdv of three officers, two unknown but one (far right) recently identified as Capt. And Adjutant of the 19th Indiana Infantry of the famous Iron Brigade. How this image was identified is an interesting story. Several years later while researching an Iron Brigade man I noticed that two of the officers in this view are also shown in an original photograph of officers and staff of General Rufus King, first commander of the Iron Brigade, which was used on the cover of author/historian Lance Herdegen's book The Men Stood Like Iron: How the Iron Brigade Won Its Name.

" Further research to identified these officers led to a signed photograph of Drum from the Indiana State Library The cdv itself is a Matthew Brady print made from the original glass negative and is reversed to "wrong read' like a tintype of ambrotype would be. Blemishes on the glass plate are apparent in the cdv print and were likely caused by mishandling and poor storage. The two officers at left are sadly unidentified.

Drum was a native of Kentucky and joined the 19th Indiana Infantry in Indianapolis as a 1st Lieutenant and Adjutant on July 29th, 1861. After one year in service with the 19th Indiana he was promoted to Captain and Assistant Commissary of Subsistence and served for a short time in his home state before he died of disease in April, 1863.

Print is mounted upside-down on a Brady studio card bearing his back mark. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. The item "Civil War Soldier CDV Capt. James Drum, 19th Indiana Infantry, Iron Brigade" is in sale since Saturday, September 03, 2016.
