Iowa CIVIL War Private John Rath CDV Photo Wearing His 15th Corp Badge

  

German-American Private John Rath, of Cedar Falls, Iowa wrote what is considered one of the finest diaries of a Civil War infantryman, (published 1n 1991 by Mid-Prairie Books, Parkersburg, Iowa and titled "Left for Dixie", Edited by Kenneth Lyftogt). Rath, a young immigrant enlisted with the Cedar Falls Reserves, served in Company B, 31st Iowa, serving 1862-65 including Vicksburg,, Missionary Ridge, Atlanta, Sherman's March the Carolina Campaigns and the Grand Review. An Original Civil War CDV waistview photo of Rath wearing a 9 button jacket with a fine view of his large 15th Army Corp diamond shape badge with affixed cartridge box emblem.

John Rath survived the War, a respected veteran and citizen. His brother George founded the Rath Packing Company of nearby Waterloo Iowa. An exc image, pencil inscr on reverse "Rath".

The photo was taken in June, 1865 when the unit was mustered out. The Photo imprint is by Louisville, Kentucky photographers, Campbell & Ecker. Minor edge wear, Overall VG.
