Rare and Interesting CDV Civil War Pennsylvania 48th Regiment Battle Flag more
A fantastic 1860s Civil War cdv of the Record Banner flag attached to the battle flag for the 48th Pennsylvania volunteers. A great historical item memorializing their numerous conflicts with the Confederate forces of Robert E. Importantly enhanced by the detailed period ink description on the back of the mount describing the circumstances of the turning in of the flag at the end of the Civil War and the names of the men who designed and painted it. The flag fills the albumen image. One can see the details of its design with the spokes around the center emblem that reads 48th PVVJuly 30th 1864. The decorative spokes are separated by 21 banners, each lettered for an engagement or battle involving the 48th. These include "Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Fort Mahone, Wilderness, Siege of Knoxville, Campbell Station, Fredericksburg, Antietam, 2nd Bull Run, Weldon Railroad" and more. An additional important feature is the contemporary ink inscription on the back of the mount, Record Flag of the services of the 48th Regt. Attached to the Battle Flag turned in to the State July4th 1866 at Phila. This Flag designed by Capt.
And painted on blue silk by? Pottsville, Pennsylvania is for a Pottsville photographer, perhaps Mundy himself wrote this description. A little of the lettering is a bit light, probably from the light reflecting when the photograph was taken, o/w near excellent condition. To see this flag as it now resides in the Pennsylvania archives, search under 48th Pennsylvania record banner. A wonderful historical artifact made at the time the unit turned the flag just after the war concluded.
This is the only example of this photograph I have seen. Likely unique with the inscription.
