RARE TWO SIDED CIVIL WAR CDV tinclad gunboat USS GENERAL GRANT & NAVAL OFFICER

  
RARE two sided Civil War CDV. Not mounted on card stock.

It is paper thin with the oval portrait glued on. One side is of a Civil War Tinclad Gunboat identified as the USS GENERAL GRANT. General Grant constantly patrolled the upper Tennessee River from Bridgeport until close of the Civil War, fighting guerrillas and aiding the Union Army in cleaning Confederate troops from the region.

In October 1864 she destroyed 22 small boats off Port Deposit and Crow Island. On 25 November she assisted in taking up pontoon bridges under guns of Confederate sharpshooters at Decatur, Alabama. She hurled 52 shells into that town 12 December 1864 and jointed USS General Thomas 15 January 1865 in the destructive bombardment of Guntersville, Alabama... Scarce 1864 photo on the Tennessee River. The opposite side is of an unidentified Naval Officer.

Master Joseph Watson was in command of that Gunboat, could be his portrait. This photograph was discovered in a box of 19th century family photographs along with a CDV portraits of more than a dozen Soldiers from the 102nd OVI and one of Brig. All were stationed at Decatur Alabama. There were also six rare CDVs of outdoor views of Decatur Alabama taken in May of 1864. Please see my other listings.
