Signed Photo Charles Henry CH HOWARD Maine Civil War Union General w Genealogy
This lot includes an autographed cabinet card from General Charles Henry Howard, who assisted his famous brother, General Oliver Otis Howard, in organizing the Third Maine Regiment during the Civil War. He was in active service throughout the Civil War and filled the positions of aide-de-camp, Adjutant-general, inspector-general; held the rank of lieutenant, then of major, then of lieutenant-colonel, colonel, and of brigadier general. Later, during Reconstruction, he cared for the newly emancipated slaves for three years. He served during the Peninsula Campaign, where he was wounded during the Battle of Seven Pines at Fair Oaks, Virginia. He fought at the Battle of Antietam and was wounded again in the Battle of Fredericksburg. In 1863, he was promoted to major and aide-de-camp to his older brother Oliver and served with him at the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He and his brother's corps were transferred to Tennessee and fought in the Battles for Chattanooga.
