Walton enlisted on September 12, 1863, as a Private, and was mustered into Battery D, 1. He was mustered out with his regiment on June 17, 1865 at Richmond, Virginia. Included with the tintype, is a July 13, 1876, copy of Waltons discharge certificate from the Office of the Adjutant General of New Jersey, who signed and sealed the document. The document measures approximately 8 1/8 inches in width and approximately 10 ¾ inches in length. As can be seen in the images of the listing, the tintypes matte is falling apart, and the document is torn along the creases where it was once folded.
