Here we offer a Civil War-era CDV photograph of President Abraham Lincoln, framed under glass in a very rare 1855 gutta percha frame. Gutta percha was the world's first sturdy latex plastic, processed from the sap of rubber trees in the mid-19th century. The material was used to make picture frames, beads for jewelry, dental fillings, and insulation for early telegraph lines. This frame is impressed with the year 1855 on the rear edge. Today, such items as these are sought by gutta percha collectors.
The frame features a metal rim. The frame bears some minor chips and cracks and what looks to be a very old repair with glue. Very secure and attractive, nonetheless. Has its original cotter pins. CDV is unmarked and was neatly cut to fit the frame.
Measures approximately 4 x 3.5-inches. Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer? -- other auctions of classic antiquarian literature and special gifts!
