Antique 1860s Civil War Union Soldier Hand Colored Large Pastel Portrait Photo    Antique 1860s Civil War Union Soldier Hand Colored Large Pastel Portrait Photo

Amazing antique, 19th century, c1863, original hand colored large sized oil pastel portrait. Depicts a brilliant portrait of a young Civil War Union Soldier from the chest up attired in his fine dress military uniform with brass buttons and Kepi. Large photograph on paper mounted to canvas. Entirely hand colored oil pastel with no visible picture underneath.

This can be referenced as either an oil pastel portrait or hand colored photograph since the picture is entirely under pastel. Very well done with clean lines and nice attention to detail especially in the face and mustache. Skin toned in beige pastel, uniform in navy blue. Medium is pastel on paper mounted to canvas done in a Realist style. Canvas affixed to original wood stretcher bars with original antique nails.

No signature that I can note. Guaranteed original to the 1860s. Provenance comes from a western Massachusetts area estate. Pastel is an art medium in the form of a stick, consisting of pure powdered pigment and a binder. The pigments used in pastels are the same as those used to produce all colored art media, including oil paints; the binder is of a neutral hue and low saturation. The color effect of pastels is closer to the natural dry pigments than that of any other process. Pastels have been used by artists since the Renaissance, and gained considerable popularity in the 18th century, when a number of notable artists made pastel their primary medium. An artwork made using pastels is called a pastel (or a pastel drawing or pastel painting). Pastel used as a verb means to produce an artwork with pastels; as an adjective it means pale in color. In Good/As Found overall condition. This piece has been restored and professionally framed by a previous owner so the work has been done for you. Exhibits gentle cracking/splitting to the paper/canvas which has been restored and repaired and the entire canvas has been backed with archival paper.

The canvas has been framed behind glass in a modern blue and dark wood tone painted wood frame and backed with brown paper. Sound and ready to hang. Canvas measures 16" x 20". Frame measures 22 1/2" x 18 1/2". Please enjoy the photos for further item details and if you have any questions feel free to ask.
