Antique Civil War Union Soldier Musket Tinted 6th Plate Tintype Photograph +Case. This is one of many Civil War-era tintypes we will be offering for sale in the coming weeks. Bookmark our store for more! Today we are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful Civil War-era tintype photograph of a union soldier, complete with stamped leather union case! An early form of photography, tintypes were made by transferring a positive image directly to a thin sheet of metal, which was coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. They were the most popular form of photography in the 1860s and 1870s. This one is a sixth-plate tintype, which refers to the size of the image. This photograph depicts a young Union soldier in full uniform holding a musket (likely Springfield). A bayonet rests in a scabbard on his hip. He has dark hair, a beard and a somber expression. His cheeks have been tinted pink. The image is mounted in a dark brown Gutta Percha union case with metal closure. A deep burgundy velvet pad with embossed crest on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph.

Image is surrounded by a gilt metal mat with elaborate scroll and floral details. The outside of the case has ornate scrollwork and floral designs embossed on both sides, surrounding an image of a hunter and stag. Case has minor gilt embellishments. Tintype presents in good, as-found antique condition, with minor patina and possible loss of detail.

Image is quite clear, and tinting is not discolored. Velvet pad has minor discoloration and minor imperfections are present on the gilt mat surround. Union case has minor wear and -patina commensurate with age and use, including possible scuffs, surface loss at edges and minor loss of gilding. What a fantastic addition to any antique photography or Civil War collection. 2-3/4 in width x appx.

3-1/4" in height (frame obscures borders of image) Dimensions/case: 3-1/4" in width (closed), appx. 3-1/2" in height, 7/8" in depth (closed).
