Inked signature to verso, along with cancelled 2-cent stamp; image slightly faded, light toning, spotting, edgewear, else very good. Hays joined the Confederate Army as a colonel of the 7th Louisiana Infantry in 1861. He participated in the First Battle of Manassas and was wounded at Port Republic.
He recovered and was promoted to Brigadier General, assuming command of the 1st Louisiana Brigade, known as the "Louisiana Tigers". He led the brigade at the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He was captured at Rappahannock Station, severely wounded at Spotsylvania Court House, and was thereafter transferred to the Trans-Mississippi. His promotion to Major General occurred in the last days of the war and was never approved by the Confederate government. After the war, he served a year as sheriff of Orleans Parish, but was removed from office by Gen.
