This one is a ninth-plate tintype, which refers to the size of the image. This photograph depicts a Union Soldier from the state of New York, who stands proudly against an outdoor backdrop. To his left, a 33-star U. Flag (produced 1859 -1861) waves.
The soldier wears his uniform and cap. His belt buckle reads "SNY" for State of New York. The image is mounted in a gutta percha union case with metal closure. A rich emerald green velvet pad with embossed crest on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass-covered photograph.
The outside of the case has ornate relief floral designs and scrollwork. Tintype presents in very good, as-found antique condition, with minor patina and dings to the image but no major visible damage noted. Frame case has wear and minor dings commensurate with age and use. What a fantastic addition to any antique photography or Civil War collection. 2 in width x appx.2-1/2" in height (frame obscures borders of image) Dimensions/case: 2-1/2" in width (closed), 2-7/8" in height, 3/4" in depth (closed).
