REED aka Candace McCormick Reed b. 1900 Her h usband died in April of 1858 leaving her the owner of her husband's Photo Gallery. She used her acquired expertise as a daguerreotypist, ambrotypist, and photographer to support her extended family.
Within 5 months of becoming a widow, Mrs. Reed advertised the opening of the Excelsior Picture Gallery at 103 Hamshire Street.
In 1862 her gallery moved to another location on the public square at 81 1/2 Hamshire. Typically worked under the name Mrs. Later in the war Reed assisted with the founding of a support group for soldiers and their families, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan, and left Quincy to serve as a nurse in the Union army hospitals in Nashville, Chattanooga and Vicksburg. Photographer's credit at reverse. Negatives preserved for one year. CONDITION IS VERY FINE THROUGHOUT. SHARP FOCUS WITH VERY GOOD CONTRAST.
