Severely wounded at South Mountain, successively a brigade and division commander in the Shenandoah, Hayes' bravery earned him a brevet for Fishers Hill and Cedar Creek. Hayes went on to be the 19th President of the United States.

On the verso, in pencil, it reads H. Shutt of the color guard Co. Shutt served in the 23rd Ohio under the command of Hayes. The piece also has the date Nov.
